Earlier I posted about the challenges of applying and auditioning for college-level study in performance music (cello). The process for selection I would not bestow upon my worst enemy.
But the lessons learned by son and parents were nonetheless important: that hard work and perserverence can sometimes lead to remarkable opportunities and I am happy to say that one young man is now walking on air.
We applied to nine institutions, fearing that the large applicant pool created by the end of the baby boom would limit options for acceptance.
The tally?
4 admissions, 2 wait-lists, 3 rejections.
And the decision is...
... Eastman School of Music - named Newsweek's Hottest Music School in their Aug 20-27, 2007 issue.
Congrats, buddy.

PS: Anyone else looking at such a tract? Send me a note: we learned a lot.
Congrats! I have a 9 year old beginner in viola. Any words of wisdom?

ReplyDeleteOur son started violin at 6, then migrated to cello at 9 (he claims he cannot remember why, really, but he told us he liked the breadth of sound at the time). A nurturing teacher worked best for him: one that permitted our son to explore other avenues other than music before committing. Despite our suggestion of other vocations, be was bound and determined that music was for him. So, if it's meant to be, it will happen. If not, so be it.
Best of luck!

ReplyDeleteRochester has a lot to offer with fun festivals and neat places to go in the city. Surprisingly good Thai, an awesome independent theater that gives a nice deal to students, and a great slice of pizza made by a very cool Italian couple who will remember your name. Make sure to bring your snow boots and some good apartment lighting because the winters can be very overcast.
ReplyDeleteAbsolute Congratulations!!
ReplyDeleteDr. Wes,
